Treatment of kidney disease in dogs
tn pas cherA diagnosis of
kidney disease does not have to mean the end. If caught early
enough, treatment can mean that your dog can have many months or
even years more. This article takes a look at how to recognise the
early signs of kidney disease and how it is treated.
Unfortunately, as dogs get older their organs may start to fail.
One of the first organs that will start to go is often the
kidneys. A gradual failure of the kidneys is known as chronic
kidney failure. Here the kidneys can no longer perform their
crucial functions of excreting waste products, regulating the
chemical composition of body fluids, and producing hormones. This
is very different from acute kidney failure where the kidneys fail
suddenly leading to changes in the body chemistry, fluid and
mineral balance which in turn affects most of the body's systems.

of a dog, however early treatment can mean a much prolonged life.
There are a number of ways in which dogs are treated when
diagnosed with kidney disease.
The causes of kidney disease have been covered in another article
but basically it is the shutting down of the body's filtration
system. As the filtration becomes more ineffective, the body
increases the blood flow to the kidneys which in turn means the
dog urinates more. To compensate for this the dog drinks more and
so on. More advanced signs of kidney disease include loss of
appetite, depression, vomiting, diarrhoea and bad breath.

kidneys by giving large amounts of fluids to flush them out- this
is usually intraveneously. This process is called diuresis and
helps to stimulate the kidneys to work again. There are three main
outcomes from this treatment. The kidneys may resume functioning
and stay working for days, months or even years to come; the
kidneys may resume functioning whilst the treatment takes place
but stop as soon as the treatment stops; finally it is possible
that no function will return at all.

progresses to the second phase which is aimed at keeping the
kidneys functioning for as long as possible. The first most
important aspect is that dog's diet is adjusted and they are given
a specialist dog food prescribed that is low in sodium and
phosphate given in combination with access to plenty of clean
water. It used to be thought that dogs with kidney disease should
be kept on a low protein diet but it has since been shown that
this is only the case once the disease is very advanced. It is now
thought that a diet with a high quality protein is far more
important. It is important however, that you consult your vet
about the diet as you may need to get the food on prescription
rather than from your local pet supplies store.

the blood pressure in the kidneys thus reducing the pressure in
them. These are often used in combination with drugs to treat
hypertension as dogs with kidney disease often suffer with high
blood pressure.
Your dog may be given phosphate binders. As the kidneys start to
fail, their ability to remove phosphorus from the blood starts to
decrease. An increase of phosphorus in the blood is associated
with lethargy and poor appetite: phosphate binders help the body
to bind phosphates in the intestinal tract so that they are not
absorbed.
Finally there are a series of other drugs that may be given in
combination with these treatments including medication to improve
kidney function, stabilise blood pressure and increase potassium
blood levels as well as treating anaemia and reducing nausea and
vomiting.
Your dog will need to go back to the vet for regular check-ups to
ensure that the treatment is working , but the combination of
these treatments can often mean that your dog may live for many
months or even years more.
