Sony is pleased to introduce the latest additions to the E Series of block cameras the FCB-EX15E/15EP and the FCB-EX12E/12EP. These new 12x cameras provide superb picture quality with many of the features you've come to expect from the FCB camera line-up, such as digital output, color enhancement and sodium vapor lamp mode.

True Progressive Scan:

Ideally suited for IP-ready monitoring applications, the FCB-EX15E/EP cameras adopt a Progressive Scan mode to provide smooth and clear images without interlace artifact effects when viewing details in a moving image (i.e., license plate of moving vehicles, a person running). All the processing is done by the PS from the CCD readout,security camera , signal to processing to video output.

Digital Output (ITU-R BT656):

By using the digital interface, the quality of the camera's video signal is maintained with minimal deterioration. This can lead to cost savings due to the direct connection to codecs/systems without the need for any additional components.

Temperature Readout:

The value of the internal temperature of the FCB-EX15EP Version cameras can be read out via the VISCA? protocol. When checking the internal temperature of equipment (i.e., speed dome unit), it is possible to use this data to turn a fan or heater on/off inside the equipment as needed.

Color Enhancement:

Ideally suited for military and low vision applications, new color enhancement options can make reading text and pictures less challenging. Available options include monochrome, binary, inverted and enhanced color modes.

If you are trying to choose a security camera, the choice can be mind-boggling. Here are some tips to help you out.

Indoor/Outdoor?

Will the camera be used indoors or outdoors? Typically all outdoor cameras can also be used indoors, but not all indoor cameras can be used outdoors. Most cameras that are built with exterior metal casings are considered weatherproof. A camera that is classified as “weatherproof” is one that can withstand freezing temperatures, rain, and heat. The typical operating temperature of a weatherproof camera is 0° F to 120° F. Vandal-proof or tamper-proof cameras are also usually considered weatherproof. If the camera will be installed in an area where it is a potential target to be damaged, a Vandal-proof (tamper resistant) camera will offer extra security to help prevent secure the premises against would-be trouble-makers.

Infrared (or IR) Cameras typically have outer metal casings, and therefore most of them are considered weatherproof. Indoor cameras, when used in conjunction with an Outdoor Housing, can be used outdoors. Any type of camera with Infrared Illuminators cannot be used inside an Outdoor Housing because the IR LEDs will bounce off the housing’s glass window.

For more extreme temperatures, it is usually advised to use an indoor Box camera in conjunction with an Outdoor Housing with a Heater and Blower. These enclosures will prevent the camera’s internal mechanisms to freeze or to overheat.

Most plastic covered Dome Cameras are designed for indoor use only. On the other hand, the Dome Cameras that have metal casings can be used outdoors. Such casings are typically found in Vandal-proof and/or hd ip camera.

CCD: Size

CCD refers to the size of the sensor chip inside the camera that picks up light. The smaller the CCD chip, the narrower the angle of view. Therefore a larger 1/3” CCD will typically yield better picture quality than a smaller ¼” CCD with the same resolution. CMOS technology is usually found in low-quality all-in-one surveillance kits offered at warehouse stores such as Costco or The Home Depot. All of the cameras that we sell are based on CCD technology.

CCD: Sony vs. Sharp—Is There a Difference?

Some may argue that a Sony CCD will outperform a Sharp CCD, which justifies the higher price tag on the Sony CCD. However, this is not true. When comparing the same camera, for example a 1/3” CCD 420 TV-Line 1Lux Dome Camera, the side-by-side benchmark test between a Sony CCD and Sharp CCD yielded results that were practically the exact same. The difference between the two CCDs is negligible to the naked eye. Similar results were derived when testing IR cameras, Bullet cameras, Pinhole/Covert cameras, etc. Our conclusion is that there is NO DIFFERENCE between Sony vs. Sharp CCD, and we are not going to pretend that there is, just so that we can sell you a more expensive camera. The Sharp CCD works just as well as the Sony CCD, all other factors remaining equal.

If you’re getting that paranoid itch to keep an eye on someone (or someplace), but only have a limited budget, fear not. We’re in the second decade of the 21st century. You don’t need to buy a bunch of expensive equipment to spy anymore. These days, all you need is an old smartphone. With a few bucks, an old Android device or iPhone, a charger, and some tape or a tripod for mounting, you can monitor whatever you want. Here’s how to do it.

If you own an Android device there a ton of apps you can use to accomplish your remote security camera needs. Getting and installing the software on your smartphone is easy. Using your camera is the hard part.

IP Webcam lets you configure everything from the resolution of your video feed, to the inclusion of audio, and has controls to ensure your phone doesn’t go to sleep while the camera is running.

Note: You will need to give IP Webcam complete control of your Android phone’s camera for this to work, meaning no other apps can use the camera while IP Webcam is running. This is a small price to pay for the app’s great functionality. Once IP Webcam is running, set up your smartphone wherever you want to monitor, plug it into an AC adapter, and then move on to setting things up on your PC (See PC instructions below).

Turning an iPhone into a spy camera

iPhone owners, you have a few options to setup remote camera viewing. Presence by People Power is a jack-of-all-trades automation app that offers free connectivity to another iOS or Android device for viewing, but no recording or other advanced technology – that all comes at a monthly price, but does include some interesting functionality if you’re considering home automation.

If you want a higher quality video feed for something like monitoring your baby in their crib, you should consider Baby Monitor 3G, which costs between $4 and $10 depending on how you set it up. The app lets you use an old iPhone as a wireless baby monitor to keep an eye on your baby while they rest, adding a visual twist to the traditional walkie-talkie solution. For an extra $5, the app can also connect to a Mac and will let you talk to your baby. These options are all great for watching your child and talking to them.

Beyond Presence and Baby Monitor 3G, your options are limited with iOS. There are ways to get an IP Camera(sony FCB-EX11DP) working, but like Presence, they will cost you a monthly subscription fee and are really not worth the investment. If you’re going to pay monthly, you should invest in real security technology.

A home security camera can give you peace of mind that your house is safe, even when you are on vacation or on a business trip. You can connect it to the Internet to check the video feed from your laptop, PDA, or cell phone.

Boot up your computer and insert the CD ROM that came with your kit. Follow the instructions on the screen to install the software.

Set up your security camera to view the area you want to protect. Most cameras will need mounting screws to secure them. However, some use adhesive strips to attach them to a wall or a smooth, flat surface.

Connect the camera to an electrical outlet or other power source. Some Sony Camera Module run on solar power and need to be positioned in an area where they can get consistent light. Others will need batteries or to be plugged into a power source.

Connect your camera to the wireless video transmitter that comes with the kit.

Connect the receiver to your computer using a USB port. You will be able to see what the camera sees now.

Download additional camera-to-Internet security software,sony FCB-EX1010P. This will allow you to view your video feed online (see Resources below) using a computer, smart phone or PDA. Install it following the instructions.

Configure the program by opening it and creating names for the cameras. Give them simple names like "Living Room" and "Front Door" or "Camera 1, 2 and 3." Click on "Connect" and “Finish.”

Go to the website where you downloaded the camera-to-Internet FCB-EX1010P software using your smart phone, computer or PDA. You will now be able to view any of your camera feeds.
