A large portion of the high cost of electric cars comes from their batteries, and the biggest problem for electric car owners is the time it takes to recharge those batteries. A new battery technology from Power Japan Plus promises to alleviate both of those issues, and add improved thermal safety into the bargain.





Power Japan Plus announced what it calls the Ryden, or Dual Carbon, battery, with carbon anode and cathode that allows for charging at 20 times the rate of current lithium ion batteries. Further, Power Japan Plus claims the new batteries experience no thermal change while discharging, so electric cars using the new technology would not need a battery cooling system to prevent thermal overrun.



One of the cost factors for current lithium ion batteries are the metals, cobalt, nickel, and manganese, that go into the cathode. Power Japan Plus has found a way to use cathodes and anodes in lithium-ion batteries constructed of carbon, a much more common and less expensive material. In addition, the company developed what it calls Carbon Complex, an organic carbon derived from cotton suitable for its Dual Carbon battery.



The Ryden battery offers the same energy density of current lithium-ion batteries, so would not allow extended vehicle range based on that factor. However, the ability to charge faster might lead to shorter stops at recharging stations. For example, the Nissan Leaf can be charged from empty to full in four hours. The Ryden battery would cut that time down to 12 minutes.



Power Japan Plus claims its new battery technology can also discharge completely without damage to the battery, potentially letting vehicle makers get more use from the electricity in the batteries. With current electric cars, the power electronics do not allow full charging or complete discharge of the battery in order to preserve the battery life.



The lack of thermal change while discharging could eliminate some of the complexity of electric cars, and increase safety. Modern electric cars use cooling systems to prevent heat overruns in battery cells. Likewise, electric car accidents would be less likely to cause a fire due to damage in the battery pack.



Power Japan Plus has developed its new battery technology to fit a standard 18650 cell, the type commonly used in laptops, and what Tesla uses in the battery packs of its Model S. However, the company announced it would only begin manufacturing its Dual Carbon cells for "specialty energy storage markets such as medical devices and satellites." It will license the technology to other companies that have the manufacturing capability to meet demand for the electric vehicle market.

    Panasonic Has 39% Share of Plug-In Vehicle Batteries, Thanks to Its Deal With Tesla

    Batteries for hybrids and plug-in vehicles are growing fast, more than tripling over the past three years to reach 1.4 GWh per quarter, according to the Automotive Battery Tracker from Lux Research. Panasonic has emerged as the leader thanks to its partnership with Tesla, capturing 39% of the plug-in vehicle battery market, overtaking NEC (27% market share) and LG Chem (9%) in 2013.



    "Even at relatively low volumes -- less than 1% of all cars sold -- plug-in vehicles are driving remarkable energy storage revenues for a few developers, like Panasonic and NEC, that struck the right automotive partnerships," said Cosmin Laslau, Lux Research Analyst and the lead author of the new Lux Research Automotive Battery Tracker.



    "To understand this opportunity, we combined a comprehensive data set of vehicle sales with detailed battery specifications for each car and supplier relationships, yielding a flexible tool that uncovers unexpected insights into this fast-changing market," he added.



    Lux Research analysts used historical and current vehicle sales, detailed battery specifications for each car, and supplier relationships to create the Automotive Battery Tracker. Among their findings:



    The electric vehicle drivetrain is the most lucrative for battery developers. Hybrids move the most cars -- the Toyota Prius is the best-selling car in Japan and California -- but their small battery packs mean they require less energy storage in total than full electric vehicles like the Nissan Leaf. Hybrids demanded 481 MWh of batteries in Q1 2014, while electric vehicles called for 774 MWh. Nonetheless, in terms of demand by OEM, hybrid leader Toyota (28%) edges EV providers Tesla Motors (24%) and Renault-Nissan (21%).



    Regulations and consumer preference drive significant regional differences. China has the highest ratio in the world of plug-in vehicles to hybrids, but its average EV battery packs are less than half the size of those sold in the U.S. Adoption of hybrids also varies widely: Japanese consumers bought more than three times as many hybrids as U.S. drivers did, despite Japan being a much smaller automotive market overall.



    Lithium-ion extends its lead, but NiMH sticks around. Lithium-ion batteries captured 68% of the 1.4 GWh of batteries used in plug-ins and hybrids in Q1 2014, with nickel metal hydride (NiMH) technology trailing at 28% -- but kept aloft by Toyota's loyalty to the lower-cost technology for its top-selling Prius. Next-generation solid-state batteries continue to make only a small dent, with less than 1% of the market.

    current are irreversible. Secondary (or storage) batteries can be used, charged, and reused. In these batteries, the chemical reactions that supply electrical current are

    Primary batteries are common since they are cheap and easy to use. Familiar primary battery uses are in flashlights, watches, toys, and radios. The most common use
    for secondary (storage) batteries is for starting, lighting,and ignition (SLI) in automobiles and engine-generator sets.Other applications include uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs) for emergency and backup power, electric vehicles (traction), telecommunications, and portable tools.



    Primary batteries are used once, then discarded. They have the advantage of convenience and cost less per battery, with the down side of costing more over the long term. Generally, primary batteries have a higher capacity and initial voltage than rechargeable batteries, and a sloping discharge curve . Most lithium primary battery do not presently require special disposal.

    Secondary or rechargeable batteries are widely used in industrial and automotive applications. Actually secondary cells are preferred to be used where the user are ready to pay higher initial cost to ensure high current delivery in a consisting and reliable manner. Lead acid and nickel cadmium batteries mainly used for commercial applications. Nickel-hydrogen and silver zinc secondary batteries are used where performance requirements are more important than installation and maintenance cost.
