My husband has a hair thinning problem and hair clip extensions

Question: I had a hair stylist attach hair extension to my hair using metal bands. My hair is fine, but I had a lot of it before the extensions. After the extensions were removed, my hair is REALLY thin. Can you tell me why this happened and what I should do about it?

Answer: I am sorry you are having trouble with the look of your hair after the extensions. We frequently get Emails from people that have very similar problems. Even though you know you are not alone, it still makes you feel bad.

Anyways, I am not a professional cosmetologists and can not offer a professional opinion. However, I have done extensive research on hair extensions and can provide you with tips and advice that I have come across over the last few years. Of course this info is Use At Your Own Risk.

There are several reasons that your hair seems to appear very thin after removing the hair extension hair.

1. Normal hair loss every day is 100-150 strands of hair. When you have hair extensions attached to your normal hair, this hair still falls out, but remains attached to the extension hair. This leaves less of your natural hair holding the extension in place. If you leave the extensions in too long, or your hair is fragile, then the weight of the extensions in the hair can actually pull out the natural hair along with the extensions, causing very thin hair or even permanent hair loss. Did you lose a lot of extensions when you were wearing them? And how long did you have the extensions in your hair?

2. Perception--After having beautiful thick hair for awhile, you get used to it. When they are removed your hair appears super thin. Do you remember the thickness of your pony tail before your colored hair extensions were attached. I.E. was it the size of a quarter.

3. Your hair stylist did not remove them properly. Most damage occurs during the removal process. Did you check out your stylist (i.e. call references, see before/after photos, etc.)

Solutions to get your hair back in shape.

1. Treat your hair very carefully. Try not to do any chemical processing, such as perms, color, highlights.

2. Switch to a thickening shampoo/conditioner. Some shampoos/conditioners I have heard (in various forums) that are good are the Nioxin ones and Aveda Hair Thickening Shampoo . My husband has a hair thinning problem and hair clip extensions I ordered the Nioxin system for him. It makes his hair look more healthy and thicker.

3. Start taking vitamins that are specifically for your hair. I know that Nioxin has vitamins that I have heard are okay. Your family doctor may be able to recommend vitamins for your hair and you might want to ask around or research on the Internet for others vitamins.

Clip in hair extensions are the least damaging and easiest to apply

There are many different types' hair extension available today, such as weaves, clip in, adhesive based fusion and metal tubing.

Clip in hair extensions are the least damaging and easiest to apply. Clip in hair extensions can give you more length, volume, texture and also allow you to add colour. You clip them into your own hair by separating your hair and starting at the nape of the neck. The amount of clips you use is up to you depending on the level of volume that you require. You simply clip the extensions to your own hair, working your way up your head. You open the clips and face them to the scalp then snap them into place.

For best results with clip in hair extensions you should style your own hair and the hair extensions separately. Clip in hair extensions can be worn all day and night, however you should take them out before sleeping. Clip in hair extension hair are sometimes just worn for a night out and other people wear them everyday. This is because clip in hair extensions are versatile and quick to put in and take out. You don't require a professional to fit them for you; you can do it yourself at home. There is no messing around with glue, meaning there is no damage to your hair. Clip in hair extensions are also reasonable in price. They are one of the most affordable forms of hair extensions but do not lack in quality because of this, most are made using 100% human hair. You can choose from lengths such as 11" through to 28".

Another form of hair extensions is bonding/sealing. This is when your real hair is sectioned and the extensions are plaited to your own hair and painted with a bonding solution, this seals the extension around the hair. This form of hair extension can last up to four months, after the four months the bond starts to loosen. This type of extension must be attached by a professional as they can be extremely difficult to do at home yourself. If done yourself at home the attachments can be hard to handle and you run the risk of ruining your hair as well as getting uneven length that will look un-professional.

One other method that you may or may not be aware of is when it comes to clip hair is the fusion method. This is when 20-50 strands of human hair extensions have warm protein glue placed on them and a plastic template separates sections of the hair, keeping it away from the scalp. Each piece of hair extension is attached with glue to your natural hair and the attachment of hair to hair extension is pulled through a hole in the plastic template. You should roll the extensions and you're natural hair together until a smooth bond is formed. This type of hair extension is a very long process and has to, with no exceptions be done on clean, washed hair, without the use of conditioner, otherwise the extensions won't stick correctly. When the time comes to remove hair extensions that have been fused on you should always get it done at a salon as the bond between the hair and extension needs to be softened and cracked; this is done with fusion remover and specialist tools

The last form of extensions that I'm going to mention is Bonding Weaves. These are very similar to clip in extensions; you cut a length of human hair to fit your head shape. The extensions are then glued to your head just below the parting. You can get the glue to do this from most hair and wig stores. This form of hair extension is safe to do at home and the removal of these hair extensions clip can also be done at home as the remover can also be purchased from the same stores as the glue. You should make sure you have the remover before you put the extensions in so you can guarantee you can get them out when needed.

There are many other forms of hair extensions, but the ones mentioned above are the most common and the ones you are most likely to come across when searching for the right type for you.

I am interested in getting hair extensions

What type of hair extensions should you get?

When you first start thinking of getting hair extensions, you may be very overwhelmed by all the different methods available today and how each one is designed for a particular type of hair. Researching all the different methods is very important and the quality of your research may directly relate to whether your hair extension will be good or bad.

Below is a Letter to the Editor asking about specific hair extension methods for fine/thin hair.

Question:

Hello. I am interested in getting hair extensions, but I am a little concerned about what they can do to your hair. I am only a teen but i have thin/fine hair that is a little damaged from blow-drying and frequent use of the flat iron. I want to know if clip hair could ruin my hair and if it is a bad idea to get them? I do not want cause any further damage or like permanently ruin my hair. Write back with any solutions or advice if possible. Thanks.

Answer:

I am not a professional cosmetologist, so I cannot give you a professional opinion. However, I have done extensive research on hair extensions and I can share with you some information that I have learned.Human hair extensions are very heavy, and if attached to hair that is damaged, they can result in permanent hair loss. The extensions can pull out your natural hair because of the extra weight of the human hair and the damaged condition of your natural hair. Synthetic hair for extensions weigh about 1/3 the weight of human hair and may be more suitable for your situation. You can do a stress test on your hair yourself to see how damaged it is. Take one strand of hair and pull it. If it comes out very easily, then your hair may not be suitable for extensions. If you have to pull it pretty hard, then your hair may be okay. There are several hair extension methods that have been developed specifically for fine and thin hair. You can research the methods at our Hair Extension Resource Center. If you really want to get hair extensions, perhaps the best place to start is schedule several hair extension consulations at different salons near you. Get different opinions about how damaged your hair really is and whether it could support hair extensions.
